Water expands by 9% when it freezes. We use this to our advantage. We have created a device within a cat’s eye that triggers when the temperature is close to freezing. When freezing commences, expansion takes place inside the device activating a colour change mechanism resulting in blue light being reflected back to the road user. When thawing takes place, the process is reversed and reflected light returns to original white.
